Advent Project

'Food Hampers For Families'

Letters went home today about the Advent Project that St Cecilia classrooms will be looking after. This year for our Advent Project we are asking 3 things of the students and their families:

1. Bring in a non-perishable food item
2. Pajama Day (Tuesday Dec 10) with a $2-$5 donation to go towards food cards.
3. Collect Canadian Tire Money to go towards gifts for these families.

Today, Mme Krawiecki's homeroom discussed what items students could bring for our hamper and wrote them in their agendas. We also discussed that we have been assigned to a family with boys (ages 5, 7, 8, 11) and girls (ages 10, 14). If some students want to be generous to bring in a small gift (e.g., books) they can do so.

White Elephant Sale

This year the Grade 6 students and teachers are holding our school’s first annual White Elephant Sale on Friday, December 6^th, to raise funds for our end of the year field trip.  We are asking the St. Cecilia School community to donate gently used, clean items anytime now up until December 5^th.  Please look through ‘no longer needed items’ in your home and consider donating to our White Elephant Sale.  We would also greatly appreciate donations of used Christmas cards, old wrapping paper, tissue paper and gift bags.  This is in keeping with our reduce, reuse, recycle environmentally friendly attitude.  Remember that ‘one person’s junk is another person’s treasure’. 

 The Grade 6 students and teachers will be sorting donations into different categories to make shopping more convenient.  Categories include:  books, toys, stuffed animals, CDs, movies, puzzles, games, Christmas knickknacks, jewellery (no used earrings please), crafts and household items.  On Friday, December 6^th, each class will have the opportunity to come to the gym and shop.  Items will be marked in increments of 25 cents and most likely will be priced in the range of 25 cents to $3.  This may be an opportunity for our young students to do some Christmas shopping.  We hope to spread Christmas cheer as students find bargains to bring home to their loved ones.

Au champ d'Honneur

The Grade 6 FSL Extended worked on a shared Google presentation document by visualizing a line from the poem 'Au champ d'Honneur.' Today we were able to add the audio in one take using the screen capture function from QuickTime.

Polar Bear Migrations

Today the Grade 4's began watching the live cam of the polar bears as they migrate from Churchill, Manitoba. We were able to catch some of the webcast and luckily watch a polar bear in the tundra. I used this live feed to launch our unit on habitats and communities. Students began inquiring about what polar bears need in order to survive in the tundra and why they wouldn't choose to stray to other habitats. They also became familiar with the Canadian tundra.

Meet the Teacher and Curriculum Night

The Importance of Teaching Digital Citizenship

As I begin preparing for the 2013-2014 school year, I am not thinking twice about teaching Digital Citizenship. When reflecting on how fast technology is being implemented throughout the schools in my school board, Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB), I feel strongly about the importance of educating students, parents, teachers and administration about internet safety. There are more and more resources online (e.g., NETS, Ophea) that provide information for school communities. There are some ministries that have implemented Digital Citizenship in their curriculum (e.g, Alberta, Quebec). As a teacher, it is motivating to know that I have support from my board (OCSB) who has started to provide more resources about digital citizenship to implement in our teaching.

As a leader in technology, I hope to do my best to bring awareness and inform my new school community about the importance of educating students to become responsible digital citizens.

Recycling Electronics

This Saturday June 22, 2013 from 9 until noon St. Emily, in conjunction with A. I. M. Recycling, will be holding a recycle of your old electronics event here in our school parking lot on the East side.

Old computers, V. C. R. s, T. V.s etc. are welcome. We also need some volunteers to help toss the recyclables into the appropriate containers. Please email Andrea Denyer at avdenyer@rogers.com if you can help. A. I. M. Recycling will pay the school for the recyclables so we thank all those who donate in advance.

11:55 - Juniors have recess on pavement
12:30 - Juniors eat lunch on the grass with your Teacher and class (homeroom)

Block 3 - Movie in gym
Block 4 - Movie in gym then back to class.
