Unpacking the Curriculum: Rocks & Minerals

We have started unpacking our next science unit on Rocks and Minerals. As a class, we discussed and understood the Big Ideas and the Overall Expectations from the Ontario Curriculum. Based on the Overall Expectations, students inquired about Rocks and Minerals, posing several questions. Students' questions were then organized by the Big Ideas and this will lead their learning throughout unit.

Earth (Day) Week

As we prepare for Earth Day/Week next week, my morning class will be learning a new Karaoké song!
We will be celebrating Earth Week with Les enfants de la terre (Children of the Earth) :)

After viewing this video, we had a great discussion about how the World could end ??
(this inquiry was prompted by Samson)

Sporks

As mentioned in the last Newsletter, the Green Club will be selling sporks (which is a 3 in 1 utensil made of durable plastic). The cost is $3. The purpose of the spork is to reduce the amount of regular plastic utensils that are being used and that often end up in the garbage. Should you want to purchase one or more, please fill out the form that was sent home yesterday and send it in with your child along with $3.

Thank you for helping St Emily be GREEN!

Multiplication vs Division Keywords

Last week we transitioned from multiplication to division. To help students know when to use multiplication or division in word problems, students were given several different word problems to analyse. They had to find specific characteristics/keywords in the word problems which determine the type of operation to use to help solve that problem. We co-constructed anchor charts to help students through the rest of our division unit.
